To participate in the summer school we invite Russian and foreign students, masters and graduate students specializing in landscape architecture, environmental monitoring and assessment of urban green infrastructure and urban soil, sustainable development of urban areas.

The 3MUGIS summer school is an annual event, which addresses relevant contemporary environmental consequences and opportunities of urbanization with special emphasis on soil functions. The program 2020 includes not only on-campus class but also a field research by route from the Barents Sea to the Black Sea. Participants will cover over 3,000 km crossing six natural zones from the forest-tundra of the Kola Peninsula to the subtropics of the Krasnodar Region. The goal is to explore the differences between natural and urban areas.

For 14 days, students will visit 3 nature reserves, 3 botanical gardens, the only polar metropolis of Murmansk, the largest mining region - the Kursk Magnetic Anomaly, a village on the Arctic coast and the historical cultural district of the Cossacks, a golf club in Rostov-on-Don. The participants will get acquainted with the socio-economic and cultural characteristics of the regions of Russia.

The 3MUGIS summer school provides students with first hand field experience examining anthropogenic impact sequences across conventional soil forming factors from Subartic to Subtropical climates. At the end of the program, students will better understand the social, climactic, and geographic factors that contribute to human soil modification in this region; the long-term implications of such changes; practical skills to perform in-field soil monitoring, soil mapping and remote sensing; and applied skills in identifying, implementing, and managing opportunities for urban green infrastructure development.

The event is organized under the umbrella of the International Union of Soil Science (IUSS), RUDN University (Russia) and the Urban Soil Institute (USA) with strong cooperation from universities, institutions and research teams from around the world. 3MUGIS-2020 summer school will host international groups up to 35 participants. 3MUGIS-2020 participants will receive 3 ECTS, recognized by educational programs worldwide.
